Greetings !

With 3 weeks to our big launch of Better And Faster, I bring you another nugget of innovation advice:

Too often, people make the mistake of trying to emulate their competitor or to tweak their own approach to be a bigger and better version of what they are already doing. There's a more clever way to find opportunity based on patterns.

A big innovation is like a splash in water. That splash creates ripples of opportunity. For example, let's take Facebook way back in 2007. At the time, it had roughly 50,000,000 fans. That's a lot, but it didn't stop big players like Google from thinking they could still take on the social network. However, it doesn't matter how hard they tried, they could never quite rival Facebook.

Having said that, way back in 2008, you could study Facebook's splash and determine several areas of breakthrough opportunity.
Let's break it down: Facebook was:
1) a place for FRIENDS;
2) a place to ARCHIVE their photos;
3) a place to share their EVERYDAY life.

Just one pattern of opportunity would be to look for the DIVERGENT ideas; the opposite.
1) If Facebook is just for FRIENDS, something has to be 'not' just for friends. That ended up being Twitter.
2) If Facebook is a place to ARCHIVE photos, something needs to be less-permanent, for all those kids out there who don't want all their photos permanently archived. Years later, that gap would be filled by SnapChat, a $4 billion company half a decade later.
3) If Facebook is a place for people to share their EVERYDAY life, people will start to overshare everything, including bland quality mobile phone photos. That's going to ruin the art of photography, and something will need to bring it back. Enter Instagram, a billion dollar acquisition, years later.

Those are just a few examples, but even back in 2008, one could have predicted dozens of opportunities just by examining the patterns of opportunity that would result from Facebook.

After studying 250,000 ideas, using our audience of 100,000,000 people like a giant focus group, we've had a chance to identify six high level patterns: Convergence, Divergence, Cyclicality, Redirection, Reduction and Acceleration. Each one has all sorts of complexity and sub-patterns that you can learn when you pull the trigger and GET BETTER AND FASTER, the Amazon.com #1 new release in Research and Indiegogo #1 Business Book.

Enjoy!
